Commuting to work by bike can be a great experience if done correctly. This is usually a great way to start the day and finish the day if you find the right roads to ride on and have the proper clothing etc. to deal with the daily commute.
First off is finding the right roads to ride on is very important. Try a few different routes in your car but normally a good biking route will be a bit longer but more pleasant because of the lower amounts of traffic and larger shoulder. Also look for routes that will be well lit if you are commuting either early in the morning or late at night.
Second get a good lighting system for your bike. This is the single most important element that you will need to stay visible in low light situations. Make sure to also purchase bright colored clothing and get reflective strips that you can either tape onto your bike or secure onto your clothing.
Thirdly make sure to get the proper gear for the weather you will be riding in. If you ride in a rainy environment get some good wet weather gear and possible some fenders for your bike too. If you ride in the heat get some lightweight breathable clothing and make sure that it’s a lighter color. If you ride in the cold get some good wind tex clothing. This will block out the cold, wind and some rain while still breathing well.
Last but not least follow the rules of the road. Motorists don’t have as much patience as they should and we need to respect that as fellow cyclists sharing the road. Use hand signals when making turns and always be heads up with your surroundings (car doors opening, people crossing the street, cars coming out of driveways, etc.). Please remember to always wear your helmet too.
