Building the proper base before doing high intensity is very important for every cyclist. Base miles are the most important part of your early season and if you do them correctly you will have a successful racing/riding season. Getting in proper base miles is like building a solid foundation for your house. If it’s done properly it will be very hard to knock down.
Your base phase should be between 1-1/2 months and 3 months depending on your fitness level and how quickly you adapt to your specific training. Base miles are a great way to get your body to your ideal racing/riding weight and they are a great way to ride with friends without worrying about getting dropped.
