Compression tights and socks have been more readily seen over the past few years. I wasn’t a true believer until I won a pair of compression tights from 2XU as a preme at a bike race. I started to use them after my hard days on the bike (after taking a shower) and they truly made a difference with my recovery for the next days training ride.
As time went on I used them during stage races even the night before single day races. I was impressed with how loose and relaxed my muscles felt after a few hours in the tights or even a nights sleep with them on. From research it seems that compression wear helps clear metabolic waste from the legs because of increased blood flow. This is huge when you are putting in a large amount of mileage or high intensity workouts.
Another large benefit of compression wear (especially the compression socks) is using them during travel. If you are seated on a plane or in a car for an extended period of time blood will pool down by your ankles. This blood has trouble circulating back up the leg because you are in a fixed stagnant position. With a pair of compression socks this really alleviates this and makes a big difference on how you feel after a long trip. If you are seated for long periods of time I would recommend the socks over the tights because of the pinching you can get on the back of your leg when it is bent at a 90 degree angle.
The last big benefit of compression socks or tights is using them if you work on your feet. Being on your feet for up to 8 hours a day will kill your legs and blood will pool down towards the ankles. Just remember that you have to use compression wear to actually see a difference so get started now and get the upper hand on your fellow athletes!
