A proper warm up before any workout is very important. The harder and shorter the workout the more intense the warm up should be. If you are doing a one and a half hour ride with 45 minutes of intensity it is very important to get in at least 20 minutes warming up with 2-3 solid efforts thrown in to get the heart rate up. This allows you to have an engine that is hot and ready for the intensity that you are going to throw at it.
If you are going out for a longer slower ride your warm up is going to be much less intense and it can be a little bit longer. Please allow for a small cool down after your rides too. Normally 10-20 minutes depending on the intensity and duration of your workout.
