Base miles are the meat and bones of cycling. Getting in a solid base before you start serious intensity is always very important. It’s just like building a house. If you build a solid foundation the house will be very hard to knock down. Getting in climbs while doing base miles is a great way to build a big engine for the goals ahead. A lot of cyclists will use climbing to build leg strength while improving the cardiovascular system. During the base mile phase remember that when you are climbing it is important to rarely go into the zone 3 heart rate or power zone. If you do, limit your time in this zone to a couple of minutes at a time. Make sure that you have adequate gearing for the climbs in your area too. You will normally want a slightly easier gear than you are accustomed to for base mile climbing since you are climbing at a slower than normal pace. Last but not least focus on proper pedaling technique while climbing. You will drastically improve efficiency by improving your pedaling technique during your base mile phase.
